At Serendipity Garden Designs, I love taking on the challenge of transforming tired, dated gardens into beautiful, functional spaces that meet the needs of modern families. One of our recent projects involved a garden that had seen better days. With overgrown garden beds, a dilapidated pool fence that was falling down, uneven paving in the entertainment area, and several unusable sections, this space was in desperate need of a makeover.
Our clients, a young couple, wanted a garden that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical and safe. They envisioned a modern space with distinct areas for relaxation, play, and gardening. Here’s how I brought their vision to life.
I removed the overgrown garden beds leaving just a small portion of existing plants and space for the hidden bulbs to surface come Spring time. To close the spaces I chose low maintenance plants suited to the microclimate. I designed a new pool fence that included a run of curved timber panelling. This creates interest and provided a privacy to the rear of the garden. This timber run adjoins the stylish new glass pool fence. In time beautiful large profile steppers will create the path.
Continuing with the warmth and contemporary touch of the timber panels I added a new timber deck the width of the house. This space is now functional and provides many spaces to relax and dine and includes the purpose built outdoor pizza oven and bench with wood storage. The natural wood tones add a sense of harmony and elegance to the space.
One of the standout features of this transformation was the inclusion of an outdoor shower using modern breeze blocks. These blocks not only provide privacy but also add a unique design element to the garden. The outdoor shower became an instant favourite, offering a refreshing retreat after a visit to the nearby beach, swim I the pool or a day in the garden.
The transformation has seen unusable areas turned into functional spaces that the couple can enjoy year round and the raised vegetable gardens provide the opportunity to grow their own fresh produce. These were placed at the rear of the property to take advantage of solar access.
To complete the transformation, I added new plants that complemented the modern aesthetic of the garden. I selected low-maintenance varieties that would thrive in the local climate and provide year-round beauty. The result is a work in progress but proving to be a lush, inviting garden that the couple can enjoy for years to come.
This garden transformation is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and quality craftsmanship. By addressing the challenges of the existing space and incorporating modern elements, I created a beautiful, functional garden that perfectly suits the needs of this young couple. At Serendipity Garden Designs, I’m passionate about turning dreams into reality, one garden at a time.
