Transforming a mid-century Gold Coast beach shack into a modern architectural marvel calls for a garden that’s equally stylish and practical. The renovation of this 1960’s Southern Gold Coast beachside home demanded a landscape that would complement its stylish, contemporary design while standing up to the harsh coastal environment. The result is a coastal garden that’s both stunning and sustainable, blending aesthetic appeal with resilience.
The garden starts with the natural elements that were already there. Two striking Aloe Trees (Aloidendron barberae), the last vestiges of the old garden were retained providing a nod to the properties past and a touch of sculptural drama. These ancient sentinels stand proud amidst the new plantings with their spiky forms adding texture and visual interest.
To frame the garden and create structure Corten steel was used to edge the garden beds. Corten steel is known for its rusted, weathered appearance and is perfect for coastal gardens. It adds a contemporary, industrial touch that contrasts beautifully with the lush greenery of the landscaped garden. The curved Corten steel edging defines the gardens curves leading the eye through the space and to the house entry. The garden beds are raised in chosen areas enhancing the visual impact and allowing for better drainage – crucial in a region that can swing from dry spells to heavy rain.
Plant selection was crucial. The garden needed to be able to withstand salt spray and dry conditions so hardy coastal plants were chosen. These included a mix of Australian native species and exotics well suited to the coastal environment. Think resilient grasses, succulents and coastal shrubs that thrive on neglect and look fabulous while doing it.
Among the plantings you’ll find the silvery-blue foliage of Agave and the feathery plumes of coastal grasses which sway in the breeze adding movement and a sense of serenity. The colours and textures were chosen to echo the natural surroundings, creating a seamless transitions from garden to beach.
The garden design also incorporates areas for relaxation and enjoyment. The impressive front deck of the house is designed much like an amphitheatre where the deck is the seat that invites toy to sit and soak in the beauty of the landscaped garden and the extensive coastal view beyond. Whether you’re enjoying a morning coffee or an evening wine, this space makes the garden a true extension of the home.
This garden is a true testament to the power of thoughtful landscape and garden design and careful plant selection. It’s a space that honours the home’s past while embracing its future, providing a beautiful, functional garden that’s perfectly in tune with the environment. It’s a place where nature and design comes together in harmony, creating a serene, stylish sanctuary by the beach.
